When I am on the road, the biggest obstacle to conquering longer distances is trying to keep my mind off thinking about how much further I have to ride. After about the 10 km mark, my mind starts to wander. After all, my aim on the cycle is to put one pedal in front of the other. So it is important to keep my mind occupied and in the present (which is a strange thing for me to say, as you will see).
To keep myself entertained on my rides, I listen to podcasts. The time in the saddle is the perfect time for me to catch up on my favorite subjects and there is one on virtually any subject you can imagine.
I have been using my rides to catch up on the History of Rome podcast, which is 191 episodes. It starts with the formation of Rome and ends with the exile of Romulus Augustulus, last Emperor of the Western Roman Empire. At the moment, I am on episode 100. Each episode is between 15 and 30 minutes long. So I get through about four or five episodes each weekend ride.
Of course, to each his own and I am sure there are many of you out there who would like to maybe listen to music or maybe even listen to nothing and be with your own thoughts. Fair enough.
But whatever your interests, remember that you are on the road and stay alert at all times.
