Did you know that the Indian bread nan is related to the word naked? The English word Naked and the Sanskrit word Nagna come from the same root word. In the olden days, most food was cooked covered, which meant that hot coals were placed below and above the dish. However, some dishes were cooked naked or with coals only placed below them. The nan was one such item that was cooked with heat only one side, or it was cooked ‘nagna’. That’s where we get the term nan.
